Experts and fans alike agree that bingo is making a comeback! It is now ever rarer for this kind of entertainment to be associated with senior citizens and nursing homes, a stereotype that has its roots in many movies and mass culture. Today, you can meet smartly dressed men with chic women in many casinos, who consume expensive drinks and exquisite dishes while striking out numbers printed on boards. The stakes played for sometimes exceed those of many poker winnings. But the casino is not the only place to play bingo. It’s just as much fun to invite friends over and play with home-made bingo cards, or ditch the paper altogether and play bingo online. There are many possibilities – it’s up to you to choose.
A History of the Bingo Game
There are many theories about how the game of bingo was established. One suggests that the name comes from a distortion of the word “beano”, which was a game similar to bingo and extremely popular in the United States in the 1920s. Beano, however, is nothing but a modification of the word “bean”, which at the beginning was used to cover numbers. During one particularly thrilling game a player became over-excited and shouted “bingo” instead of “beano” – and fans of the game quickly adopted this catchy name on a permanent basis. Archive materials also describe the popular Italian lottery “Lo Giuoco del Lotto d’Italia”, which was popular among wealthy Italians in the 16th century. The success of the lottery caught the interest of French investors, who began to organise it too in their own country. The game quickly moved to the German salons, providing entertainment for the richest aristocrats. Thus bingo, today considered a fairly common game, was a few centuries ago the preserve of the higher elites. However, over time the middle classes came to like this game, and it gained popularity among them. By the 18th century, teachers were using lottery boards to teach basic mathematics, science, and spelling to children and young people – something that was especially common in German and Austrian schools.
The 1930s – Bingo Conquers the World
By the beginning of the 20th century, every European citizen was familiar with the simple rules of the lottery, and it was time for the game to conquer overseas lands. Eventually, the bingo game that we know today was established in New York. Beano, the forefather of bingo, was played by discs marked with numbers drawn from a cigar box, and players placing beans on their boards to cover the corresponding figures. The game was particularly popular at fairs and markets in Atlanta, Georgia. It was there that businessman and toy maker Ed Lowe was strolling in a park one evening, when he spotted a crowd of people gathered at a small booth. Despite his best efforts he couldn’t break through the crowd to actually play the game – but nevertheless it interested him greatly. It was then, apparently, that his friend shouted the now legendary word “bingo” to announce that he had won the game. Lowe was quick to realise the great extent of the profits that the game could bring across the United States, and thus the entrepreneur succeeded in building his road to riches. wished to build a road to gain wealth and he succeeded. Early on, two versions of bingo hit the US market, and flew off the shelves. Ed Lowe even hired a mathematics professor from a prestigious university to help him expand the number combinations on the boards, and managed to create 6,000 bingo cards, all different. According to legend, the professor developed mental health problems after completing the work, leading to a stay in one of Georgia’s psychiatric hospitals.
The Church Also Plays Bingo!
The history of the Catholic Church also includes an incident linked with the game of bingo. The pastor of a small town near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania was in debt to many people, and found a way to repay large sums by organising meetings where he played bingo. The cleric not only paid off his debts, but also attracted many parishioners to the church, who also wanted to try their luck. Soon after this success, other parishes in Pennsylvania and the length and breadth of the United States began to organise Sunday bingo meetings and tournaments. It was from this that the stereotype of old men playing the game arose, because most parishioners regularly attending church were seniors or middle aged.
